Infestation of Intestatinal Parasites in Vietnam



Abstract
The distribution and the infestation rates of endoparasites in the rural Vietnamese were examined. during the period from September, 1966 to June, 1970. The stool specimens collected were 3, 247 (male 2, 122, female 1, 125) in total and examined by the direct iodine-stained smear method.
The results, obtained are as follows;
1. Seven kinds of helminths and five kinds of protozoa are detected from 1, 957 or 60.3 ofo of the specimens.
The species of helminths are Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Trichocephalus trichurus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis, Hymenolepis nana, Echinostoma ilocanum. The protozoa are Entamoeba histolytica, Iodamoeba by tschlii, Giardia lamblia, Chilomastix mesnili and Entamoeba coli.
2. Of 2,122 male, 1,280 or 60.6% were shown positive infestation with one or more
different kinds of parasite and in female, 677 or 60.1% of 1,125 were positive.
3. The rates of helminthic infections were; Ascaris lumbricoides 51. 3%, Ancylostoma duodenale 6.9%, Trichocephalus trichurus 4.7% Strongyloides stercoralis 0. 4%, Hymenolepis 0.4%, Enterobius vermicularis 0.5% and 1 case of Echinostoma ilocanum.
4. The rates of protozoan infections were; Entamoeba histolytica 3. 9%, Giardia lamblia 2.3%, Iodamoeba biitschlii 0.20%. Chilomastix mesnili 0. 2% and Entamoeba coli 5.4%.
5. There was a little difference in infestation rates between region II and IV. Region IV, Mekong delta region, showed more infestation rate of ascariasis, 55.1%, than
